Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin essential for normal durintilay function (it participates in the synthesis of neuromediators), the nervous system (it is essential for maintaining the integrity of the nervous system and especially the myelin sheath that protects the nerves and optimizes their function) and in the formation of the blood. It's one of eight B vitamins. It is normally involved as a cofactor in the metabolism of each of the cells of the human body, more particularly in DNA synthesis and regulation as well as in fatty acid synthesis and energy production.

It exists in several forms belonging to the cobalam family: cyanocobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, methylcobalamin and adenoylcobalamin, the first two being stable forms. Cobalamins have a chemical structure close to heme, but the central iron atom is replaced by a cobalt atom, hence their name.

Vitamin B12 deficiency results in a form of anaemia, one of the characteristics of which is the presence of slightly enlarged red blood cells (macrocytosis). The total synthesis of this complex biomolecule, carried out in 1972 by Robert Burns Woodward, Albert Eschenmoser and their team, took several years.

It should be noted that certain minerals such as copper and vitamin C have a negative effect on the absorption of vitamin B12.
